Energy efficient appliance rebate program starts March 1

Replacing old household appliances with new ENERGY STAR® models could mean rebates of up to $150 from a new program that began March 1, 2010, in South Dakota.

The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated South Dakota $772,000 in federal stimulus grant funds for the residential rebates. The consumer mail-in rebate program will be administered by the state Bureau of Administration's Energy Management Office.

Starting March 1, rebates will be offered on the purchases of certain residential ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances as replacements for existing, less-efficient units. The appliances and rebate levels:

  • Clothes washers: $100
  • Dishwashers: $75
  • Refrigerators: $150
  • Freezers: $150
  • Water Heaters: $125

Rebates will be available on a first-come, first-served basis – subject to availability of the limited funds. Appliances must be purchased on or after March 1, and each household will be eligible to receive one rebate for each type of appliance.

Purchase receipts will be required as part of the application process. Proof of recycling of old appliances, in the form of a recycler's receipt or retailer's disposal affidavit, will be required for refrigerator and freezer rebates.

A special Web site, ApplianceRebate.sd.gov, informs consumers about the remaining available amount of rebate money, eligibility requirements, the mail-in application form, and Internet links to lists of eligible appliances on the www.EnergyStar.gov Web site.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) made available $296 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for state energy-efficient appliance rebate programs for consumers. A
population-based formula was used to determine the amount each state is eligible to receive.

The March 1 start date was set at the direction of the DOE to provide South Dakota retailers and consumers adequate time to make informed purchase decisions.
